‘You would like to review this book, wouldn’t you?’ said Paul Beasley-Murray to me, with a note of insistence. ‘But I don’t know anything about art - I never got beyond matchstick men.’ Somehow I left the meeting with this book in my hand.

However, it is an introduction for those who know nothing about this field. As well as contributors who cover the expected themes - the Renaissance, icons, Mary and so on - it includes some unexpected surprises. One chapter deals with positive Free Church approaches to religious art, and another examines the contributions of a Welsh Pentecostal artist. Additionally, the book is topped and tailed with biblical and philosophical contributions.

As someone ignorant of this field, I found it a lucid introduction. If it lacked one quality, I would have liked it to engage more with the more iconoclastic strands of Christianity. Beyond that, the price is steep, although that is doubtless due to the several colour plates included. It does not seem immediately relevant to pastoral ministry, but if you are interested in dipping your toes into this subject, it is a useful tool.
