James Dobson originally wrote this book in 1983, and it has been
reprinted 14 times since then. Written as advice to people who
are experiencing relationship breakdown, the book shows how much has
changed since the ‘80s. Any insights from feminism, psychology,
counselling or an understanding about the complexity of human
sexuality are light years away from the guidance Dobson offers,
in a highly emotive style, and from a firmly conservative
position. His basic premise is that infidelity and distance in a
partner must be met by ‘firm but loving confrontation’, and this is
illustrated by the many people he has come into contact with through
his work with the organisation Focus on the Family. Dobson
dissects how marriages can drift, and his final chapters have some
useful pointers as to the establishing of a good marriage.
