The blurb on the back of this book states that the author “illuminates the mystery of the afterlife in Christian and non-Christian traditions in this probing, eloquent and reassuring meditation drawn from many sources: religion, literature, science, psychology, and personal and professional experiences”.

Readers will find some sections helpful, but other parts seem to be at variance to Christian belief. Yet the book helps us to look at some issues that are important for the bereaved. Fischer poses the question “Do Relationships Continue Beyond Death?” This is something I have often been asked and we need to be careful how we respond. Dismissal of this concept or uncritical acceptance of everything we are told is not helpful. The author does not present us with answers, but she makes us think about our assumptions and prejudices.

Valuable issues are included, and those supporting the bereaved will hear the thoughts of people they know permeating the pages. A useful reference tool.
